Rough Fell sheep are large, beautiful and kindly, sporting a mighty cream fleece. The ewes are horned with heads and legs boldly marked black and white. I keep some of their wool natural and dye black the rest with organic colourings to replicate the Rough Diamond patterns on the sheep’s faces. I produce a truly rare and unique tweed that is only available here at Shacklabank Farm.
Swaledale sheep are highly strung deer like creatures with the ability to leap dry stone walls, bog trot and survive on the bleakest of moors. A horned ewe with a distinct mask of charcoal and white spectacled eyes. Swaledale’s have a small but soft fleece that converts into wonderfully silky tweed.
Herdwick’s are ancient stocky, stubborn survivors. Tough with moments of tenderness when kept close at arm. Herdwick’s have a great wiry fleece which comes in natural shades of chocolate, brown and grey. A great tweed of distinct character is produced when blended.
